Hanging Wood-Framed Standards

Shelving standards are slotted metal strips that support various types of shelf brackets. Although metal shelf standards can be secured to the wall with toggle bolts or hollow wall anchors, these will bear only light loads; they'll be stronger when anchored to wall studs.
Studs often are 16 inches apart on center, but can be 24 inches apart. Ideally, standards will be installed about 6 inches in from either end of a shelf to help prevent sagging. This means that a 28" shelf is ideal for standards anchored to studs spaced 16 inches apart. To better support long wall shelves, you may want to attach a third, middle standard to an intermediate stud.
The steps below will show you how to give metal standards a more decorative look by inserting them into grooves routed into hardwood strips which, in turn, are secured to wall studs.

    INSTRUCTIONS
    1) Cut the grooves
Use a table saw (or circular saw or router) to cut a groove down the center of the wood strip. Make the groove wide enough to accommodate the metal standard and deep enough so the standard will be flush with the wood strip once installed. (Fig. 1)
    PredrillFig. 2
    2) Predrill
Predrill screw holes in the grooves so you can secure the wood strips to wall studs. (Fig. 2)
    Leveling and ScrewingFig. 3
    3) Center, plumb and level
Center and plumb the wood strips on wall studs, level the bases, and screw them to the studs. (Fig. 3)
    Checking LevelsFig. 4
    4) Test the fit
Seat each metal standard in its groove, and tack it with a screw. Temporarily mount two shelf brackets and double-check them for level. (Fig. 4)
    Install ScrewsFig. 5
    5) Install the standards
Once the slots are dead level, drive the rest of the screws. The metal standard should be flush with the surrounding wood. (Fig. 5)
    Add brackets and ShelvesFig. 6
    6) Add brackets and shelves
Fit shelf brackets into slots in the standards, and mount the shelves. (Fig. 6)
