Shelving standards are slotted metal strips that support various types of shelf brackets. Although metal shelf standards can be secured to the wall with toggle bolts or hollow wall anchors, these will bear only light loads; they'll be stronger when anchored to wall studs.
Studs often are 16 inches apart on center, but can be 24 inches apart. Ideally, standards will be installed about 6 inches in from either end of a shelf to help prevent sagging. This means that a 28" shelf is ideal for standards anchored to studs spaced 16 inches apart. To better support long wall shelves, you may want to attach a third, middle standard to an intermediate stud.
The steps below will show you how to give metal standards a more decorative look by inserting them into grooves routed into hardwood strips which, in turn, are secured to wall studs.
