Installing a Custom Gate

Unless you leap over tall fences in a single bound, you'll need a gate to traverse fence boundaries.
Though prefabricated gates are easy to find, you may prefer to make your own, customized version using the fence materials. Gates afford many design possibilities, and are a manageable palette for personalized details and fine workmanship. A natural focal point, the creatively designed gate will lend character and charm to even an unremarkable fence.
The gate must be diagonally braced to remain square and solid despite heavy use. Exterior screws and a drill/driver simplify the work and make strong connections that won't loosen over time. Due to the extra load on the main gate support post, you may want to sink it deeper than the other posts and surround it with a concrete collar.

INSTRUCTIONS
1) Assemble the gate
To build a fence gate, lay it out on a smooth surface, then screw the frame and cross members to the pickets. (Fig. 1)
Attach HardwareFig. 2
2) Attach the hardware
Firmly brace the gate while you attach the hardware. It's wise to set the swing side slightly high to counteract the initial sagging. (Fig. 2)
Add Gate StopFig. 3
3) Install a gate stop
Use a cedar or redwood 1x2 strip as a gate stop. Nail it with 8d galvanized nails to the post opposite the hinges. (Fig. 3)
Attach Gate SpringFig. 4
4) Install a gate spring, if desired
Attach a gate spring to automatically close the gate. This feature is useful if you have small children or pets, but do not set the spring tension very tightly or the door may close too quickly, catching a wayward arm or tail, or hitting the person or pet which follows you through it. (Fig. 4)
5) Affix the handle
Install a matching gate handle. On this gate, the spring closure eliminates the need for a latch. (Fig. 5)

6) Seal the gate
Seal the gate with paint or deck sealer, finishing it to match the fence or adding accent colors to highlight its function and design.
